Developing an iPhone 4 case

We worked on an iPhone 4 case in the last few months. Some people might wonder what took us so long since it’s just a simple case. But developing plastic products and the process that takes place before the actual production is time consuming and cost intensive.

Before we can create a case like this, we need a 3D drawing of the final object, and to produce it, we need a mold. These two things take a lot of time and cost a lot of money. That’s why larger companies have a much faster production time.

To start the design process, we needed a drawing of the iPhone 4. Apple publishes the drawings on their site, but unfortunately they weren’t available right away. It took a few weeks before we were able to get it. We were lucky, however, to get an iPhone 4 a few days after the launch day which helped us to get some experience with it. Measuring the phone is helpful, but you can’t design a precision case if you don’t have the exact dimensions of the phone.
